Preparation Guide: Traditional Bed Bug Treatment

How do I prepare for a traditional bed bug treatment?

Every bed bug treatment is going to require some preparation efforts.  Traditional bed bug treatments require the most efforts for preparation.  We provide a clear and easy to follow bed bug preparation guide during our FREE bed bug inspections.  A copy of our bed bug preparation guide is also emailed to clients immediately after they sign their service agreement.  We are happy to answer any questions you might have related to preparing for a bed bug heat treatment!

Basic Preparation:

PEOPLE, PLANTS AND PETS
All people, plants, and pets must be out of the home and secured outside. All animals must be kept away from our Service Professionals and the treatment area. Please drain and remove fish from their tanks.

CLOTHING, LINENS, BLANKETS, TOWELS, ETC.
Please wash and dry your clothes, linens, blankets, towels, and other washable items.  Items stored within 8 feet of where you sleep should be carefully considered.  Bed bugs will typically stay close to where humans sleep. 

BEDS AND BEDDING:
Bed bug certified mattress encasements are really important and we strongly recommend that bed bug certified mattress encasements be installed on all beds.  Mattress and box springs. 

ELIMINATE CLUTTER
Cardboard boxes, old magazines, stacks of papers and old mail can all provide places for bed bugs to hide.  When you discard items seal the bag tightly and dispose of outside.  

List of items that should not be heated.

Bed Bug Service requires a certain amount of preparation prior to the technician’s arrival to make sure your home or apartment is properly serviced. It may take several weeks to gain total control of a bed bug infestation using traditional methods, your patience and help are greatly appreciated. If you are seeking immediate relief from bed bugs we recommend our bed bug heat treatment.

Please follow the steps below for the best results.

Bedrooms
All sheets, bedding materials and pillows except the bottom sheet should be removed from the beds and sealed in plastic trash bags in preparation of cleaning. This helps prevent spreading bed bugs to other rooms. Sheets, pillows and clothes stored under the bed should be washed in soap and hot water, Bed spreads, covers and other items that cannot be washed should be dried in the dryer at.

Clothes need to be removed from closets and drawers, placed in bags and washed and/or dried at a high temperature in a clothes dryer for 30 minutes. Drapes should be bagged before moving from an infested room. Remove them from the bag and dry them at a high temperature for 30 minutes.

Please empty the night stand and under the bed. Please place items in a sealed plastic bin items should be kept in plastic bins unless they are in active use.

Other Rooms
Upholstered furniture in other rooms will need to be thoroughly inspected and treated. Any blankets, throw pillows, etc. should be bagged and dried at a high temperature for at least 30 minutes.
Vacuum carpeting and floor thoroughly, especially along the baseboards with a crack and crevice attachment. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately in a sealed plastic bag in an outside trash bin.
Remove electric outlet plates in all rooms to allow for treatment of wall voids.

People and Pets
All members of the household need to be out of the household during the treatment this includes cats, dogs, birds and reptiles. A good rule of thumb is to arrange for everyone to be out of the treatment area for at least 2 hours after treatment.

If you have fish, please consult with your local pet store or veterinarian regarding the proper preparation procedures for pest control treatments.

After Treatment
Please DO NOT use over-the-counter bed bug spray.
Please DO NOT purchase any new furniture until all treatments have concluded.
